Bob Huggins Seeks Reinstatement, Denying Resignation from West Virginia Basketball

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former West Virginia men's basketball coach Bob Huggins is seeking to be reinstated, asserting he never officially resigned from his position. This contradicts the university's statement last month, attributed to Huggins, announcing his resignation and retirement following a DUI arrest.

Huggins' attorney, David A. Campbell, argues that his client never submitted a formal resignation letter nor verbally informed the university of his intent to resign. This claim is outlined in a letter obtained by West Virginia Metro News, which challenges the university's stance. The letter emphasizes that Huggins' employment agreement mandates written notification of early termination to the athletic director and West Virginia's general counsel, a procedure that was not followed.

The letter further suggests that a text message from Huggins' wife prompted the university's statement. It also mentions Huggins' participation in a rehabilitation program after the DUI incident and asserts his readiness to resume coaching duties.

However, West Virginia University remains firm in its position. In response, Stephanie Taylor, vice president and general counsel, refuted Huggins' claims as "completely factually inaccurate" in a letter also acquired by West Virginia Metro News. Taylor pointed out that Huggins had been consulting with his long-time lawyer, James "Rocky" Giancola, and Bob Fitzsimmons during the discussions leading up to his resignation. She highlighted Fitzsimmons' involvement in conversations regarding Huggins' post-resignation benefits, implying an acceptance of the resignation.

Taylor's letter requests clarification on Huggins' legal representation and official position, emphasizing the discrepancy between his current claims and documented evidence. This situation has become increasingly complicated, as the university reportedly considered parting ways with Huggins even before the DUI incident. Adding to the controversy is Huggins' use of a homophobic slur during a radio interview, further damaging his reputation.

In the meantime, West Virginia has appointed assistant coach Josh Eilert as interim head coach and plans to conduct a formal search after the 2023-24 season. Huggins' departure has also triggered several player transfers.
