A man and woman were tragically killed in front of their children in a Westbrook, Maine parking lot on Monday evening. Police report that bystanders bravely intervened, tackling and disarming the shooter after he also assaulted a 75-year-old onlooker. The suspect, 24-year-old Marcel Lagrange Jr. of South Portland, has been charged with two counts of murder.

Westbrook police officers arrived at the scene around 8:30 p.m. to find a woman being shot near a vehicle. Inside the vehicle, they discovered a deceased man and two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, who witnessed the horrific event. The children were thankfully unharmed.

The victims have been identified as 36-year-old Brittney Cockrell and 41-year-old Michael Hayter, both of Westbrook. The state medical examiner confirmed their cause of death as gunshot wounds. As of Tuesday, investigators have found no apparent connection between Lagrange and the victims. Lagrange is currently held at the Cumberland County Jail, and it's unclear if he has legal representation.
