Former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson is poised to embark on a new chapter in his football career, transitioning from the professional gridiron to the collegiate sidelines. Reports indicate that Jackson is finalizing an agreement to become the next head coach at Delaware State University, fulfilling a long-held aspiration to lead a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) program.

Jackson's coaching journey began shortly after his retirement from the NFL in 2023. He served as an assistant coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, during the 2024 season, gaining valuable experience at the high school level. Now, he's ready to take the reins of a college program, inheriting a Hornets team that finished the 2024 season with a 1-11 record.
Jackson's move to Delaware State adds him to a growing list of prominent former NFL players who have transitioned into college coaching roles. He follows in the footsteps of Michael Vick, who took the helm at Norfolk State, and Bill Belichick, who made a surprising move to become the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Deion Sanders also made a successful transition to college coaching, first with Jackson State and then with the Colorado Buffaloes.

Jackson's NFL career spanned 15 seasons, highlighted by a Super Bowl victory and three Pro Bowl selections. He was known for his electrifying speed and playmaking ability, particularly during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. His tenure with the Eagles included three Pro Bowl appearances between 2008 and 2013, during which he amassed 6,512 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns. He also etched his name in NFL history with the "Miracle at the Meadowlands II," returning a punt for a game-winning touchdown against the New York Giants as time expired.
Following his time with the Eagles, Jackson played for the Washington Commanders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, and Las Vegas Raiders before concluding his career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. Over his career, Jackson accumulated impressive statistics, catching 641 passes for 11,263 yards and 58 touchdowns.

As Jackson prepares to lead the Delaware State Hornets, his experience and accomplishments in the NFL are expected to bring a new level of excitement and expertise to the program.
