Dutch King to Issue Formal Apology for Nation's History of Slavery

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

On Saturday, July 1st, 2023, marking the 160th anniversary of slavery's abolition in the Netherlands, King Willem-Alexander is anticipated to deliver a formal apology for the country's involvement in the practice. This follows a similar apology issued by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in December 2022.

In his December address, Prime Minister Rutte acknowledged that while no one currently alive bears personal responsibility for slavery, the Dutch State, throughout its history, holds responsibility for the immense suffering inflicted upon enslaved individuals and their descendants. He emphasized the lasting impact of the past on the present.

Amsterdam district counselor Vayhishta Miskin, speaking to Deutsche Welle, noted the emotional impact of the Prime Minister's apology, describing it as words people had awaited since 1863. She characterized the apology as a crucial first step towards societal healing and progress. Beyond the apology, the Prime Minister also committed over €200 million to educational programs focused on addressing inequality.

Miskin further conveyed the desire among her constituents for an acknowledgement of past injustices from the monarch, emphasizing the need for tangible change in the present. While an apology is welcomed, she stressed the importance of practical solutions like access to quality education and employment opportunities for future generations.
