Fort Worth Targeted by Hackers Over Texas' Stance on Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following Texas' recent ban on gender-affirming care for minors, the City of Fort Worth experienced a cyberattack. Officials suspect the hacker group SeigedSec, who allegedly claimed responsibility on Telegram, targeted the city due to its state's new legislation. The group's message, as relayed by city officials, suggests Texas was chosen as a target specifically because of the ban.

The attack primarily affected a city work order system, exposing data like invoices, internal emails, and spreadsheets. Fort Worth's IT Solutions Director, Kevin Gunn, assured the public that the compromised data was already accessible via Freedom of Information Act requests and that no sensitive personal information, like social security numbers or banking details, was compromised. While the hackers reportedly accessed a website used by city employees to track maintenance activities, the city's main public website remained unaffected.

The incident prompted a city-wide password reset as a security precaution. Investigations are ongoing, with local and federal law enforcement involved. Although the city has confirmed the data's origin within their systems, they are still assessing the full extent of the breach.
