For 65 years and counting, the close-knit community of Houghs Neck, a historic fishing village on Boston Harbor, has demonstrated unwavering patriotism by hosting an annual fishing trip for disabled veterans. This cherished tradition, passed down through generations of lobstermen, plumbers, electricians, and other working-class families, offers a day of camaraderie and gratitude to those who have served our nation.

Approximately 200 veterans from various hospitals across Massachusetts are transported to Houghs Neck, where volunteers assist them in boarding over a dozen fishing vessels. With a police and fire boat escort, the flotilla heads out onto the harbor, creating a moving display of respect and appreciation.

Windy Berry Hogan, a Houghs Neck native, has witnessed this tradition firsthand since her childhood. Carrying on the legacy of her fisherman father, she now participates by crewing a boat and helping veterans enjoy their time on the water. Hogan believes the enduring success of this event stems from the love and dedication passed down through families like hers.

This year's event held special significance with the participation of Kevin Mulvey, a Vietnam veteran and friend of a Houghs Neck family who lost a loved one in the war. Mulvey's presence brought a sense of closure and healing to the community.

The unique design of lobster boats, with their open sterns, provides easy access for veterans with mobility challenges. This thoughtful consideration underscores the community's commitment to ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Originating in the 1950s with veterans of World War II and Korea, this tradition continues to embrace veterans from more recent conflicts, including Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Despite the hardships faced by the fishing industry, the lobstermen of Houghs Neck generously donate their time, resources, and effort to make this event possible. Fundraising efforts, such as selling paper flounder placards, help cover the costs.
