Meet Dexter, a seven-year-old F6 Savannah cat from Ontario, Canada, whose impressive size has earned him the nickname "gentle giant." This extraordinary feline, six generations removed from a Serval, a wild African cat, measures an astounding 35 inches long and tips the scales at 24.3 pounds. His owner, Laura Kay, purchased him from a breeder in 2016, seeking a unique pet, and Dexter certainly fits the bill.
Dexter's size presents some unique challenges. Regular cat toys are no match for his strength, so Kay resorts to dog toys to keep him entertained. Even the largest cat tower she could find pales in comparison to his stature. Cat treats are also too small, necessitating the use of dog treats with similar ingredients. Perhaps the biggest hurdle is the litter box situation. Standard litter boxes are simply too small, prompting Kay to use a 30-gallon storage bin instead.
Dexter's imposing size can be intimidating, even at the veterinarian's office. Kay recounts instances where people have been apprehensive around him, worried about his potential strength. However, she assures everyone that Dexter is a gentle giant, despite his size. Caring for such a large cat comes with a hefty price tag. Kay spends close to $115 per month on Dexter's food, toys, and vet bills. A significant portion of this cost goes towards his specialized diet, consisting primarily of raw ground chicken meat specifically formulated for pet consumption.
Despite the challenges and expenses, Kay adores her oversized feline companion. Dexter is undoubtedly the apple of her eye, and she provides him with the utmost care and attention. His unique size and gentle nature make him a truly remarkable pet.
