Elite gymnast Levi Jung-Ruivivar, who competed for the Philippines in the Paris Olympics, has announced she's taking a step back from competitive gymnastics to focus on her well-being and seek treatment for an eating disorder. Jung-Ruivivar, a student at Stanford University, will be taking a leave of absence from the university during the winter quarter to dedicate herself to recovery.
In a joint Instagram post with the Stanford gymnastics program, the 18-year-old shared her personal struggle, explaining that while she has been enjoying both her academic and athletic pursuits at Stanford, the eating disorder has been hindering her ability to fully thrive. She acknowledged that it has taken significant mental and physical energy away from her passions.
Jung-Ruivivar expressed that the decision to open up about her experience was not easy, but she felt it was crucial to address the issue head-on, both for her physical and mental health. She emphasized the importance of seeking help to mitigate the ongoing impact of the disorder.
The gymnast expressed gratitude for the unwavering support she has received from her coaches, family, and friends. She's optimistic about her recovery and looks forward to fully enjoying her life as she tackles this challenge. Fellow gymnasts, including Hezly Rivera and Skye Blakely, have publicly voiced their support for Jung-Ruivivar's decision.
