Leaked Audio Reveals Trump Discussing Classified Documents, Contradicting Prior Statements

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

A recently surfaced audio recording has captured former President Donald Trump discussing classified documents, seemingly contradicting his earlier assertions. News outlets obtained the recording on Tuesday, revealing a conversation between Trump and aides where he appears to be holding a Pentagon document outlining plans for an attack on Iran. This contradicts a statement Trump made to Fox News host Bret Baier, where he denied possessing such a document.

In the recording, Trump can be heard saying, "These are the papers," referring to the Pentagon documents. He mentions Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, suggesting Milley supplied the attack plan. "He said that I wanted to attack Iran. Isn’t it amazing?" Trump says in the recording. "I have a big pile of papers, this thing just came up. Look. This was him. They presented me this – this is off the record but – they presented me this. This was him. This was the Defense Department and him."

The recording captures the sound of rustling papers as Trump speaks. He appears to discuss the document's contents, stating, "I was just thinking, because we were talking about it. And you know, he said, ‘He wanted to attack Iran, and what…’" followed by, "These are the papers."

This new evidence appears to clash with Trump's June 19th interview with Bret Baier, where he insisted there was no document. "There was no document. That was a massive amount of papers and everything else talking about Iran and other things," Trump told Baier. "And it may have been held up or may not, but that was not a document. I didn’t have a document, per se. There was nothing to declassify. These were newspaper stories, magazine stories and articles."

The recorded conversation also includes Trump discussing his presidential authority to declassify documents, a key element of his defense in previous accusations. "See as president I could have declassified it," Trump remarks. "Now I can’t, you know, but this is still a secret." A staffer responds, "Now we have a problem," to which Trump concludes, "Isn’t that interesting."

A Trump spokesperson addressed the leaked audio, asserting that it demonstrates Trump's innocence. The spokesperson told the Daily Caller that the recording captures Trump speaking rhetorically and humorously about Anthony Weiner, and that the media and Trump's detractors were quick to fall for another "Democrat-DOJ hoax."
