Mar-a-Lago Employee Faces Court Appearance in Trump Classified Documents Case

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Carlos De Oliveira, a Mar-a-Lago employee, is scheduled to appear in a Miami court following accusations of conspiring with former President Donald Trump to obstruct the investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents. The Justice Department alleges that De Oliveira, along with Trump and another aide, Waltine Nauta, attempted to delete security footage sought by investigators. This new charge against De Oliveira expands the scope of the original indictment against Trump and Nauta.

The Justice Department's updated indictment includes additional charges against Trump related to the willful retention of national defense information and obstruction. The charges stem from Special Counsel Jack Smith's ongoing investigation into Trump's handling of classified records after leaving office.

The indictment details allegations that De Oliveira, acting on Trump's instructions, inquired about deleting the server containing the security footage. He allegedly told another employee that "the boss" wanted the server erased. The employee reportedly responded that they lacked the ability and authorization to carry out such an action.

A Trump campaign spokesperson dismissed the new charges as a politically motivated attack, characterizing them as part of a "witch hunt" orchestrated by the Biden administration to undermine Trump. They asserted that the Justice Department lacks a substantial case and is resorting to desperate measures.

This case unfolds against the backdrop of other investigations involving the handling of classified information, including those concerning President Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence. The discovery of classified documents in Biden's office and home, as well as at Pence's residence, has raised questions about the handling of such materials by government officials.

While the Justice Department has appointed a special counsel to investigate Biden's handling of classified documents, the status of that investigation remains uncertain. In contrast, the investigation into Pence's handling of classified material has concluded without charges being filed.
