Michael Cole, renowned for his portrayal of Pete Cochran in the iconic television series "The Mod Squad," has passed away at the age of 84. Cole's passing was confirmed by Fox News Digital, with sources indicating he died peacefully on Tuesday at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones.

Cole's career was defined by his role in "The Mod Squad," which aired from 1968 to 1973. He starred alongside Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III as one of three young undercover detectives. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1940, Cole had a challenging upbringing, never knowing his father. He navigated a difficult adolescence, leaving high school at 16, marrying young, and eventually divorcing after having two children.

Cole's path to acting was unconventional. After moving to Las Vegas and then Los Angeles, he encountered acting coach Estelle Harman, who recognized his potential and provided him with free lessons. This mentorship proved pivotal, leading to Cole's eventual casting in "The Mod Squad" by producer Aaron Spelling. Ironically, as Cole recounted in his 2018 autobiography, "I Played The White Guy," he initially resisted the role.

During the show's five-season run, Cole survived a severe car accident that required extensive stitches. He is survived by his third wife, Shelley Funes.
