Authorities are actively searching for John Nigh, an inmate classified as dangerous, who escaped from the Craven County Jail in North Carolina on Sunday. Nigh, with the assistance of two cellmates, managed to breach the jail's ventilation system, prompting a multi-agency manhunt involving the Craven County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

The escape involved removing a ceiling grate, accessing a utility chase within the ceiling, and exiting through a rooftop vent. Nigh's cellmates aided in concealing the escape by manipulating his bedding to give the impression he was still in his cell.

Law enforcement officials warn that Nigh has a history of violent behavior and has been armed in previous confrontations with officers. His criminal record includes charges across multiple counties and a documented tendency to resist arrest.

In June 2024, Nigh allegedly fired shots at Onslow County Sheriff's deputies while attempting to flee apprehension. He was wanted at the time for multiple offenses, including breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny, and unauthorized use of a vehicle. During the encounter, he reportedly fired two rounds from a small-caliber handgun at the deputies, none of whom were injured. This incident resulted in charges of attempted first-degree murder and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Nigh's record also includes charges from May 2024 in Craven County, involving drug possession, resisting arrest, and assaulting an officer with fentanyl exposure. He is also accused of attempting to escape from custody while being transported by a Craven County Sheriff's deputy and causing property damage at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

Nigh is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 190 pounds. Identifying tattoos include the letters "JMN" on his upper left arm and a cross on his upper right arm. Authorities urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.
