Pelosi Urges Democrats to Champion Abortion Rights in 2024 Campaigns

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called on Democrats to prioritize abortion rights as a central theme in their 2024 election campaigns. In a recent interview on MSNBC's "Inside with Jen Psaki," Pelosi contended that the issue resonates strongly with voters and will be key to Democratic victories. She reflected on the 2022 midterms, where Democrats performed better than some predictions, attributing this success in part to the focus on abortion access following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Pelosi's comments come as prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence, have also addressed the abortion issue. Trump has declared himself "the most pro-life president" in history, while Pence has urged Republican presidential candidates to support a 15-week national abortion ban.

Pelosi emphasized the need to reverse the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade, stating that Congress has the authority to achieve this "one way or another." While she didn't explicitly endorse expanding the Supreme Court, an idea some Democrats have floated, she did advocate for term limits for justices.

In contrast to Pelosi's optimism, Pence believes Republicans will gain ground by campaigning on abortion restrictions, citing polls indicating public support for a 15-week ban. He argued that such a ban would bring American law in line with many European countries.
