While winter's chill may have melted the towering snow woman, the record remains firmly planted in Bethel, Maine. For nearly 25 years, this small town has proudly held the Guinness World Record for the tallest snowperson ever constructed.
The magnificent creation, known as Olympia, reached a staggering height of 122 feet and 1 inch upon completion on February 26, 2008. This wasn't Bethel's first foray into giant snowperson construction. In 1999, they set their initial record with "Angus King of the Mountain," named after the then-governor. Olympia, named after Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, surpassed this earlier attempt by a significant margin.
Constructing this icy giant was a month-long community effort, involving an astounding 13 million pounds of snow. Images from the Guinness World Records website reveal the scale of the project, showcasing construction vehicles transporting mounds of snow and cranes hoisting it high into the air.
Olympia's impressive features included eyelashes fashioned from skis, a nose crafted from chicken wire and painted cheesecloth, and lips made from repurposed red car tires. Three truck tires served as buttons, while 30-foot spruce trees formed her arms.
Although Olympia eventually succumbed to warmer temperatures, Bethel's title has endured. A 2020 attempt in Donnersbachwald, Austria, appeared to briefly surpass Olympia's height. However, according to the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, this Austrian snowman was disqualified for unspecified reasons, leaving Bethel's record intact and secured in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Chamber of Commerce simply received confirmation that if Olympia is listed in the book, they still hold the record.
