Biden Reportedly Favoring Shorter Stairs on Air Force One

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

To simplify his travel and minimize potential stumbles, President Biden has reportedly been opting for the lower stairs of Air Force One more frequently. This shift, observed and privately acknowledged by advisors, is aimed at easing travel for the 80-year-old president. This information comes via a recent Politico report, which also noted that Biden has been seen wearing sneakers more often, a change from his previous preference for dress shoes. This reflects a growing prioritization of comfort, a shift from his earlier belief that anything other than dress shoes was unsuitable for a president.

When questioned about this change and whether it indicated mobility issues, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to elaborate on the decision-making process, stating she was unaware of specific protocols for Air Force One.

This adjustment comes after several instances of Biden tripping while ascending the taller stairs of Air Force One. According to Politico, aides are working to reduce situations that might highlight any physical vulnerabilities. While presidents typically use the shorter stairs in inclement weather, the shift in Biden's usage appears to be a more permanent adjustment.

Amidst concerns about his age and fitness for a second term, Biden has defended his age as a strength, emphasizing his experience and wisdom in a recent interview. He asserted his knowledge surpasses most people, citing his extensive experience and proven effectiveness.
