Luigi Mangione, Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO's Death, Arraigned in Pennsylvania

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, caused a disruption during his extradition hearing in Pennsylvania. As officers escorted him into the Blair County Courthouse, Mangione loudly criticized the proceedings, calling them "completely out of touch" and "an insult to the intelligence of the American people." He was quickly ushered inside by the accompanying officers.

Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, appeared composed during the hearing, conferring with his attorney, Thomas Dickey. At the time of his arrest in Altoona, authorities found him in possession of $8,000 in U.S. currency, $2,000 in foreign currency, masks, a passport, and a "ghost gun" with a silencer. Prosecutors suggest the weapon is similar to the one used in Thompson's killing.

Dickey, Mangione's lawyer, explained the presence of masks by suggesting that "some individuals remain apprehensive about COVID." Mangione was denied bail and will be held at SCI Huntingdon. His legal team has two weeks to file a writ of habeas corpus, contesting the legality of his detainment.

District Attorney Peter Weeks stated that the charges in New York supersede those in Pennsylvania and pledged cooperation with the extradition process. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicated the possibility of seeking a governor's warrant for extradition, a process that could take a month.

He reportedly had a manifesto detailing complaints against the healthcare system.
