Burnes Battles Dizziness, Pitches Brewers to Victory Over Reds

Created: JANUARY 04, 2025

Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes delivered a stellar performance on Friday, fanning a season-high 13 batters in a 1-0 shutout against the Cincinnati Reds. However, the game wasn't without a concerning moment for the Brewers. With temperatures soaring into the 90s and humidity high, Burnes experienced a brief spell of dizziness in the fifth inning, prompting trainers and teammates to rush to the mound.

Following a first-pitch strike to Reds shortstop Matt McLain, Burnes suddenly crouched down, visibly disoriented. "Everything got dizzy, and my vision blurred," Burnes explained post-game. "I tried blinking a few times, hoping it would clear, but it didn't. It lasted for a minute or two, which felt like an eternity. Thankfully, after some water and a short break, it subsided and didn't return. It was definitely frightening in the moment."

Despite the unsettling episode, Burnes managed to complete the fifth and returned to strike out the side in the sixth. Brewers manager Craig Counsell downplayed the incident, suggesting it was a momentary lightheadedness, possibly triggered by exertion, rather than dehydration. "He just needed a moment to recover," Counsell stated. "His vision became blurry, but the trainers don't believe it was hydration-related."

The Brewers broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning with an RBI single from catcher Victor Caratini. Burnes’ dominant two-hit performance improved his record to 8-5, with a 3.73 ERA. Reds manager David Bell praised Burnes' impressive arsenal, noting his increased use of breaking balls contributed to his success. "He has exceptional stuff," Bell commented. "He incorporated more breaking pitches tonight, which clearly worked in his favor."
