Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

A Northridge, California resident is facing federal charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle a substantial amount of methamphetamine through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) concealed within clothing packed in his luggage. The incident occurred on November 6th as the individual, identified as 31-year-old Raj Matharu, prepared to board a flight to Sydney, Australia.

According to the Department of Justice, airport security personnel flagged Matharu's two suitcases – a pink one and a gray one – during routine X-ray screening. The X-rays revealed anomalies within the luggage, leading officers to conduct a more thorough inspection. Upon opening the suitcases, they discovered numerous articles of clothing, both white and light-colored, that appeared stiff and were coated in a suspicious white residue.
