Dancers at Portland, Oregon's Magic Tavern have been on strike for almost four months, aiming to unionize and address what they describe as hazardous working conditions. This move follows the successful unionization of dancers at Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in North Hollywood, California, making it the first unionized strip club in the U.S.
The Magic Tavern dancers initiated their strike on April 4th, citing issues such as insufficient security cameras, an unstable pole, uneven stage flooring, and the presence of a gas odor. They also allege management retaliated against those who voiced complaints. The club owner has not yet responded to requests for comment, and the establishment remains open with non-striking dancers.
The dancers announced their affiliation with the Actors' Equity Union in June. This union represents over 51,000 actors and stage managers in the live theater industry. Should their efforts succeed, Magic Tavern would become the second unionized strip club in the nation.
Portland has a high concentration of strip clubs, holding the title of America's "strippiest" metropolitan area per capita in 2015, according to Pricenomics research. Only Houston, with a population nearly four times larger, had a higher total number of such venues.
The striking dancers have launched an online petition detailing their concerns, which has gathered over 2,100 signatures. They have held several pickets, with another planned for July 30th.
