Cate Blanchett Voices Deep Concerns Over AI's Impact Beyond Hollywood

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Renowned actress Cate Blanchett recently expressed serious reservations about the expanding role of artificial intelligence, emphasizing her worry extends far beyond its potential effects on the film industry. In a BBC interview, Blanchett conveyed her apprehension regarding AI's implications for society as a whole, stating her concern is "less about its impact on my profession and more about its effect on the average person." She worries about the broader consequences for humanity, viewing the threat of AI as "very real" due to its ability to "replace anyone." Blanchett highlighted the ease with which voices can be replicated, noting that a mere few seconds of recorded audio is enough for AI to mimic someone's voice. She characterized AI as a double-edged sword, acknowledging its creative potential while underscoring its "incredibly destructive" capabilities. Blanchett's comments come shortly before her agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and YouTube unveiled a partnership to manage actors' and athletes' likenesses in AI-generated content. This collaboration aims to provide clients with tools to identify and potentially remove AI-generated content featuring their image. CAA CEO Bryan Lourd praised YouTube's initiative, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and talent rights in the ongoing AI discussion. Several actors, including CAA client Scarlett Johansson, have faced challenges with unauthorized use of their likeness in AI-generated material. Johansson pursued legal action against OpenAI last year over a voice system she claimed closely resembled her own. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman denied any intention to replicate Johansson's voice and expressed regret over the situation. Actor Tom Hanks has also issued warnings about AI-generated advertisements falsely using his name and likeness to promote various products. He urged the public to be cautious of such scams and emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice from qualified professionals.
