Kevin Costner Overcomes Filming Hurdles for "Horizon: An American Saga"

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Actor and director Kevin Costner recently shared the challenges he encountered while filming the second installment of his upcoming film series, "Horizon: An American Saga," in Utah. His initial filming location, complete with a custom-built suspension bridge, was rendered unusable due to heavy snowfall and rising water levels. This forced Costner to make a difficult last-minute decision to abandon the site, a change that he admitted was emotionally challenging. He described feeling like "a baby a little bit" because he had already envisioned how the location would appear on film.

While the second location they found was visually appealing, it didn't fit the "desolate" atmosphere Costner had envisioned for the scene. Determined to find the perfect backdrop, he dispatched his crew in a helicopter to scout the Shivwits Reservation. Expressing his hope for a suitable location along the Santa Clara River, Costner acknowledged a reluctance to abandon his original vision but recognized the necessity of adapting. He reflected on the experience as a valuable lesson in letting go.

Travis Duran, the Shivwits Reservation Land Resources Manager, commended Costner and his team for their respectful treatment of the land during filming. Duran highlighted the crew's proactive approach to safeguarding cultural sites and the environment, noting their use of signage to protect local wildlife. The production also contributed to improvements on the reservation, including road widening and enhanced accessibility. Duran praised Costner's team for leaving the area in better condition than they found it.

Amidst the ongoing drama surrounding the conclusion of his hit show "Yellowstone," Costner has shifted his focus to "Horizon." "Yellowstone" is scheduled to air its final episodes in November after five seasons. While the show's ending was earlier than anticipated, co-creator Taylor Sheridan confirmed that the storyline for Costner's character, John Dutton, remains largely unchanged, although its conclusion will be more concise. Sheridan also hinted at the fate of Dutton, assuring fans that the character will not be killed off in a sudden, unexpected manner, unlike Sheridan's own character's demise in "Sons of Anarchy."
