Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In 2024, numerous individuals bravely confronted their attackers, with several incidents captured on video. Here's a look back at some of the year's most compelling examples of self-defense.

Highway Showdown

In March, a tense situation unfolded on Interstate 75 near Ocala, Florida. A truck driver reported being targeted by another trucker, 43-year-old Dylan Belleastin, who allegedly threw a water bottle at his vehicle. The victim initially stopped to confront Belleastin but thought better of it and drove away. Belleastin pursued the victim, pulling alongside and firing shots. The victim, fearing for his life, returned fire. Dashcam footage from Belleastin's truck corroborated the victim's account, showing him shooting on two separate occasions. Belleastin was later apprehended and faces charges of aggravated assault, criminal mischief, and firearm display during a felony.

Barista's Bold Response

June saw a Seattle bikini barista take decisive action against a customer who allegedly threw coffee at her. The incident, captured on video at Taste of Heaven Espresso, stemmed from a dispute over the price of coffee and water. The barista, Emma Lee, 23, stated that the customer had a history of disrespectful behavior. Lee told FOX 13 Seattle the man yelled, spat, and attempted to force open the business's window. Feeling threatened, she responded by smashing his windshield with a hammer. Lee defended her actions, emphasizing the customer's alleged assault and the need to hold him accountable.

Foiled Carjacking

In October, a Washington D.C. bartender thwarted a carjacking attempt by three teenagers. The incident, caught on camera at a gas station, showed the bartender, Randy White, physically defending himself and his Jeep against the would-be thieves. White told FOX 5 DC he refused to surrender his hard-earned possessions, fighting back until the teenagers abandoned their attempt. He attributed his resilience to his upbringing and determination to protect his property.

Ingenious 911 Call

Also in October, a Florida woman demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness while being held captive. During an alleged attempted rape, she contacted 911 under the guise of ordering a pizza. The dispatcher quickly recognized the coded plea for help. Using phone triangulation, authorities pinpointed her location and dispatched deputies. Bodycam footage revealed the victim's distress and her immense relief upon being rescued.
