CNN Panel Challenges Schumer's Claims on Biden's Fitness for Office

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former Obama advisor and CNN commentator Van Jones didn't mince words on Monday, criticizing Senator Chuck Schumer's assertion that Democrats hadn't obscured the truth about President Biden's capacity to govern. Jones expressed surprise at Biden's condition, stating, "Obviously, Biden wasn’t at his best, and it caught me off guard. Those close to him surely had a clearer picture. Much was known but kept under wraps. Now, it's steadily coming to light. For anyone to maintain credibility, the pretense needs to stop. Schumer's claims are simply unbelievable."

This critique followed NBC News' Kristen Welker confronting Schumer on "Meet the Press" with a clip from February 2024. In the video, Schumer defended Biden's mental sharpness against what he termed "right-wing propaganda." He maintained this stance on Sunday, denying any deception regarding Biden's health.

CNN host Abby Phillip found Schumer's refusal to answer whether Biden could have handled another term "incredibly revealing." Fellow panelists echoed this sentiment. S.E. Cupp called Democrats' insistence on Biden's strength "delusional," adding, "They likely would have lost regardless, but acknowledging the reality would be better. These kinds of statements erode credibility." Cupp warned that such posturing would damage their credibility in the future.

CNN's Scott Jennings highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that acknowledging a cover-up would be admitting to "one of the biggest cover-ups in modern American political history." He pointed fingers at politicians, pundits, and White House correspondents, saying, "Democratic politicians and pundits weren't truthful. Many covering the White House either ignored the signs or swallowed the White House press secretary's narrative. Admitting the truth now would be confessing to a major deception of the American public. Perhaps that's why the charade continues."

Ashley Allison, a former Biden-Harris campaign staffer, suggested Biden might have experienced fluctuating cognitive abilities, citing the June debate as a revealing moment.

On "Meet the Press," Schumer praised Biden's legislative achievements and patriotism, stating, "President Biden has an incredible legacy. The legislation passed under his leadership is among the most impactful since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. He appointed a record 235 judges. He’s a true patriot and a remarkable individual. His decision to step down was his own, made in the best interest of both the Democratic Party and the nation. He deserves our respect." When pressed on Biden's capacity for another term, Schumer deflected, saying, "I won't speculate. His record is exceptional, and he'll be remembered as a truly outstanding president."
