German Surgeon Fined for Pre-Match Parachute Protest

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A German surgeon and Greenpeace activist has been ordered to pay a €7,900 fine after parachuting into Munich's Allianz Arena just before a European Championship match between Germany and France in June 2021. The 40-year-old's stunt, intended as a climate protest, resulted in his conviction for endangering air traffic and causing negligent bodily harm.

The activist's parachute became entangled in a steel wire after he landed on the pitch, having first thrown down a large inflatable ball with the slogan "Kick out oil." Three individuals, including the surgeon himself, sustained injuries during the incident.

Greenpeace has expressed regret over the incident, and the surgeon offered apologies during his trial. In addition to the fine, he was ordered to pay €3,500 in damages to one of the injured parties. A second individual involved in organizing the protest received a €3,000 fine.
