Authorities have revealed that the Tesla Cybertruck that detonated in front of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries, contained gasoline and camping fuel containers, along with substantial firework mortars. The explosion occurred shortly after the vehicle arrived at the hotel valet area.
Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated in a press conference that the renter of the Colorado-acquired Cybertruck has been identified, but authorities are awaiting full confirmation before releasing their name. Investigators tracked the vehicle's movements via Tesla charging stations and license plate readers, which first registered the Cybertruck in Las Vegas around 7:30 a.m. The vehicle was observed traveling along Las Vegas Boulevard before arriving at the Trump hotel.
Video footage presented during the press conference displayed the truck bed laden with gasoline and camp fuel canisters, as well as large firework mortars. Remarkably, the Cybertruck's exterior remained largely intact, which Sheriff McMahill credited with minimizing damage to the surrounding area, noting that the blast force was primarily directed upwards. Seven individuals suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, while hotel guests were relocated to accommodate the ongoing investigation.
Both Sheriff McMahill and FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Jeremy Schwartz declined to identify the deceased individual, emphasizing the importance of accurate identification. A joint terrorism task force is investigating the possibility of terrorism. Schwartz reassured the public that authorities are working collaboratively and believe this to be an isolated incident.
This incident follows another deadly event in New Orleans on the same day, where a rented pickup truck driven by Shamsud Din Jabbar plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The truck in the New Orleans incident displayed an ISIS flag. A Turo spokesperson, the rental company involved in both incidents, expressed condolences and emphasized their commitment to safety protocols.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk provided information to investigators regarding the Cybertruck's locking mechanism, which engaged after the explosion due to the force of the blast, and assisted with obtaining surveillance footage from Tesla charging stations. Musk also commented on the incident via social media, attributing the explosion to fireworks or a bomb carried in the truck bed and highlighting the Cybertruck's structural integrity in containing the blast. President Biden acknowledged both the Las Vegas and New Orleans incidents and confirmed ongoing investigations, including exploring any potential connections between the two.
