Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May is set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery later this month, dealing another significant blow to the team's injury-ridden pitching rotation. The 25-year-old right-hander will have his right flexor tendon repaired on July 18th by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
May has been working to rehabilitate a flexor pronator strain, receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection six weeks prior and being placed on the 60-day injured list on May 23rd. This marks the second major surgery of May's career. His 2021 season was cut short after two months due to Tommy John surgery. He made a comeback last August, pitching in six games before lower back tightness sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
In the current season, May had a promising start, boasting a 4-1 record with a 2.63 ERA and 34 strikeouts across nine starts. This injury comes at a difficult time for the Dodgers, as fellow right-hander Walker Buehler has yet to pitch this year while recovering from his own Tommy John surgery, though he hopes to return later in the season. Julio Urías recently rejoined the rotation, but his first post-injury performance was less than stellar.
