A holiday drone show in Orlando, Florida took a frightening turn on Saturday, December 21, 2024, when multiple drones malfunctioned and plummeted to the ground, injuring a 7-year-old boy. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. local time during a performance over Eola Lake.
Footage captured by a witness and shared on X (formerly Twitter) shows the drones initially maneuvering into formation before several suddenly lose control and descend, crashing into the area below. A bystander can be heard expressing concern for the safety of nearby children.

The Orlando Fire Department confirmed that the young boy was taken to a hospital for treatment. Geese on the lake were also seen reacting to the falling drones, attempting to escape the chaotic scene.

City officials stated that the drone show had received the necessary permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). However, in response to the incident, the city cancelled a second scheduled performance that evening, citing "technical difficulties."

The FAA has announced that it will investigate the malfunction. Drone light shows are subject to FAA regulations, including waivers for operating multiple drones simultaneously. The agency reviews various aspects of drone show applications, including software, safety protocols, contingency plans, and operator qualifications.
For the second consecutive year, the City of Orlando had contracted Sky Elements Drones to manage the show. The company expressed its concern for those affected and pledged to cooperate with the investigation. They emphasized their commitment to upholding the highest safety standards established by the FAA.
