While President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has touted a decrease in homicides, the reality is more nuanced. Although there has been a slight reduction, the overall homicide rate remains significantly high. The president's claims of a 17.5% decline have been challenged, with data suggesting a smaller decrease, much of which occurred during his predecessor's term.

The highway blockade caused significant disruption for travelers, but President López Obrador urged citizens not to be manipulated by the gangs and their tactics. Rodríguez revealed that the gang has established connections within the community, including a spokesman who owns a construction company with government contracts.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a National Guard officer was killed by a car bomb in Celaya, a city north of Chilpancingo. This attack, attributed to the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, underscores the escalating violence between rival cartels. The use of a car bomb to target law enforcement represents a concerning development reminiscent of tactics used during the peak of the 2006-2012 drug war.

Chilpancingo itself has been plagued by drug-related violence. Recent incidents include the murder of four taxi drivers and the discovery of dismembered bodies accompanied by threats from the Ardillos gang. These events point to the gang's growing influence and the challenges faced by local authorities.
