Economist Arthur Laffer's Insights on the 2024 Presidential Race and Economic Policy

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Renowned economist Arthur Laffer recently shared his perspectives on the upcoming 2024 presidential election and the current economic landscape in an interview at FreedomFest. Laffer, speaking with Fox News Digital, offered his assessment of President Biden's performance and suggested a path towards economic improvement.

Reflecting on President Biden's age, Laffer, who is slightly older than the president, encouraged Biden to draw upon his past experiences and embrace common-sense economic principles. He advocated for lower tax rates, a broader tax base, sound monetary policy, minimal regulation, free trade, and restrained government spending, suggesting that these measures would allow the economy to flourish.

Laffer highlighted Biden's past support for the Tax Reform Act of 1986 as evidence of his understanding of effective economic policy. This landmark legislation significantly reduced tax rates across the board, a move Laffer believes had a positive impact on the economy.

Known for his contributions to the Reagan and Trump administrations, and for popularizing the Laffer Curve, a concept that explores the relationship between tax rates and government revenue, Laffer praised Trump's economic performance during his first term, particularly his response to the pandemic. While acknowledging the importance of Operation Warp Speed, Laffer expressed general skepticism about government intervention, emphasizing individual responsibility in navigating challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. He believes individuals are better equipped to make decisions for themselves and their families than the government.

Laffer also spoke highly of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democratic presidential candidate, noting his longstanding connection to the Kennedy family and praising his campaign. He expressed admiration for Kennedy's approach and identified with his "Kennedy Democrat" stance.

Surprisingly, Laffer also voiced his appreciation for Bill Clinton's economic policies, highlighting Clinton's efforts to reduce government spending and cut certain taxes. While acknowledging some policy disagreements, Laffer expressed his willingness to support Clinton again if he were running.

Among the Republican candidates, Laffer identified Ron DeSantis and Tim Scott as strong contenders, praising their accomplishments and leadership qualities. However, he signaled his likely support for Donald Trump, citing his strong economic record during his first term.
