Ellison's Controversial Comparison: Likens Justice Thomas to 'Django Unchained' Character

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, sparked controversy by comparing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to a subservient character in Quentin Tarantino's film "Django Unchained." During an interview with the Michigan Chronicle, Ellison criticized Thomas's stance on affirmative action, likening him to "Stephen," a house slave portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the movie.

Thomas, the second Black justice on the Supreme Court, voted with the majority to overturn race-based considerations in college admissions. He argued that individuals should be evaluated based on their unique experiences and accomplishments, not their race. Ellison, however, interpreted Thomas's decision as aligning with "the powerful and special interests," suggesting that Thomas prioritizes personal gain over his responsibilities to the public.

Ellison went further, calling for Thomas's impeachment and questioning his legitimacy on the Supreme Court. He asserted that Thomas's position is "illegitimate" and that he should be removed from office. Ellison expressed disappointment that Thomas, despite his background as a Black man from the Deep South, has not, in Ellison's view, adequately addressed issues of racism and segregation. He emphasized that one's mindset, not skin color, determines their actions and beliefs.

This incident follows recent Supreme Court decisions that have drawn both praise and criticism. Several 2024 Republican presidential candidates lauded the rulings as victories for freedom, while others expressed concerns about their potential impact.
