House Republicans are increasing pressure on the Biden administration to disclose Climate Envoy John Kerry's flight logs. They aim to ascertain the expenses associated with military flights and calculate the carbon footprint of any private jet travel undertaken by Kerry.
This renewed scrutiny follows a recent congressional hearing where Kerry maintained he's never personally owned a private jet, but acknowledged using military aircraft five times since joining the administration. Representatives Mike Waltz, Brian Mast, and Cory Mills have penned a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, questioning the "exceptional circumstances" necessitating these military flights, which are known to be significantly more expensive than commercial travel.
The representatives also raised concerns regarding Kerry's admission of using a private jet "perhaps once" in his official capacity. Their letter probes whether this flight was indeed official and, if so, whether the State Department factored in the environmental impact of private jet travel, given Kerry's climate-focused role.
Adding to the transparency concerns, the lawmakers pointed out the lack of readily available information about Kerry's office and staff on the State Department website, highlighting that this information only came to light during the recent hearing.
The representatives have formally requested all of Kerry's flight records – encompassing commercial, military, and private travel funded by taxpayers – dating back to the start of his tenure. They've also requested records of his meetings with foreign officials. Waltz's letter referenced previous reports about substantial costs associated with government officials' use of military aircraft, citing the example of former Health Secretary Tom Price.
During the hearing, Kerry vehemently denied using private jets for official business, labeling such claims as "outrageous lies." However, previous reports have revealed numerous trips made by his family's private jet since President Biden took office, although the jet has since been sold.
