Indiana Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Mother's Fatal Stabbing

Created: JANUARY 17, 2025

A 42-year-old Terre Haute, Indiana man, Michael Charles Wilson, has received a 40-year prison sentence after pleading guilty but mentally ill to burglary with serious bodily injury. This charge stems from the May 2021 death of his 72-year-old mother, Gayle Wilson.

Gayle Wilson was found deceased in her bedroom by a relative, with bloody garden shears near her body and multiple neck injuries. Michael Wilson was apprehended approximately 40 miles away in Owen County. Initial charges of murder and auto theft were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, which stipulated the 40-year sentence.

Prior to this incident, Gayle Wilson had reported to law enforcement that her son struggled with severe mental health challenges and was not taking prescribed medication at the time. Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt stated that the agreed-upon 40-year sentence balances considerations of mental illness, community safety, and providing closure for the grieving family.

This case highlights the complex intersection of mental health and criminal justice, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems for individuals struggling with mental illness and their families.
