A recent report by the government watchdog group Open the Books has revealed that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) distributed tens of billions of dollars in grants to organizations supporting migrants and refugees. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within HHS, responsible for the care of unaccompanied migrant children and refugees, oversaw these substantial grants. In fiscal year 2021, ORR granted $2.4 billion to non-profits, increasing to $3.4 billion in 2022. A dramatic surge saw this figure reach $10 billion in 2023 before decreasing to $4.2 billion in 2024.
