Gulf of America: DeSantis Acknowledges Trump's Name Change in Executive Order

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Following President Trump's announcement to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis referenced the new name in an executive order addressing severe winter weather. Issued on Monday, Executive Order 25-13 outlines emergency measures in response to a large weather system impacting the Gulf Coast and Interstate 10 corridor. The order specifically mentions the "Gulf of America" as the origin of the low-pressure system bringing rain and blizzard conditions to North Florida.

The winter storm, while predicted to bring relatively low snow accumulation by northern standards, is anticipated to cause significant disruption across the affected region, which includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Snowfall is expected to range from one to five inches in areas more accustomed to hurricanes than winter weather.

DeSantis's order seemingly preceded Trump's official executive order formalizing the Gulf of Mexico's name change. The federal order, titled "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness," designates the area previously known as the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," citing its significance to the nation. Trump's order mandates the Interior Department to implement the name change within 30 days.

The Gulf of America, as defined by the order, stretches over 1,000 miles, encompassing areas from South Padre Island, Texas, to the Straits of Florida. Florida boasts the longest Gulf coastline, extending approximately 775 miles from Perdido Key to Key West.

This renaming follows other landmark renaming initiatives by both Trump and his predecessor, primarily involving U.S. military bases. Trump also previously reverted the name of Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley, a move that generated controversy even within his own party. Trump's order emphasizes the importance of recognizing American heritage and honoring significant American figures.
