Cleveland Guardians third baseman José Ramírez achieved a career milestone Thursday, smashing three home runs in a single game for the first time. Ramírez's power display propelled the Guardians to a decisive 10-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field.
The four-time All-Star went yard in his first three at-bats, culminating in a 390-foot blast to right field in the sixth inning. Ramírez showcased his versatility by hitting home runs from both sides of the plate. Cleveland starter Aaron Civale praised Ramírez's performance and consistent effort, stating, "He plays the game the best way every single night... When he plays the game the way he plays it, he’s the best in the game."
While Ramírez had two additional opportunities to extend his historic performance, he struck out swinging in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. He acknowledged swinging for the fences in his final two plate appearances, aiming to join the exclusive club of only 17 players since 1901 to hit four home runs in a single game. The last player to achieve this feat was J.D. Martinez of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017.
Guardians manager Terry Francona revealed he was hoping opposing pitchers wouldn't get to a 3-0 count against Ramírez, as he didn't want to be the one to tell him to take a pitch. The loss marked the first time the Red Sox fell below .500 since April 28.
