Kelly Clarkson Addresses Talk Show's 'Toxic' Work Environment Allegations and Divorce Impact

Created: JANUARY 22, 2025

Following accusations of a toxic work environment on her talk show, Kelly Clarkson has revealed upcoming changes for the show's fifth season. A May report featuring current and former staff members alleging abusive behavior from producers and higher-ups left Clarkson feeling blindsided. She expressed her belief in progress and improvement rather than outright cancellation, emphasizing the need to learn from mistakes and strive for better practices.

Former employees alleged that executive producer Alex Duda shielded Clarkson from the negative atmosphere she allegedly fostered. One former staff member even referred to Duda as a "monster," claiming similar issues occurred on Duda's previous shows.

Among the changes planned for the show is a relocation of production from the Universal Studios Lot in Los Angeles to New York. Clarkson stressed the importance of a positive work environment, particularly given her age and preference for her ranch over a stressful workplace. She aims for a happy, empowered, and inspired team.

Clarkson acknowledged that the report highlighted an underlying problem she was previously unaware of. She views it as an opportunity to improve and become better role models, incorporating these goals into existing plans to ensure inclusivity and teamwork.

Clarkson also discussed the impact of her divorce from Brandon Blackstock, which was finalized in March 2022 after nearly seven years of marriage. Her tenth studio album, "Chemistry," features songs written during flights between custody drop-offs with her two children. She described the exhaustion and emotional toll of juggling work and custody arrangements, noting that these flights provided the space for much of her songwriting.

The album's title track, "Red Flag Collector," directly addresses the hardships of the divorce and her legal name change. Clarkson admitted to channeling her anger and hurt into the song, expressing her true feelings about the situation.
