DOJ Staff Reshuffling Ahead of Expected Bondi Confirmation

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In anticipation of Pam Bondi's confirmation as U.S. Attorney General, the Department of Justice has reportedly reassigned numerous senior officials across multiple divisions. Sources indicate that career employees within the criminal and national security divisions have been moved to different roles within the DOJ.

Among those reassigned is Bruce Schwartz, former head of the office of internal affairs, according to a source who spoke with The Associated Press. The AP also reports that approximately 20 officials have been affected by these changes.

Another notable reassignment is that of George Toscas, a seasoned deputy assistant attorney general in the national security division. Toscas played a key role in high-profile investigations, including those involving Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information and Donald Trump's possession of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

Described by a former colleague as possessing unparalleled expertise in terrorism and espionage cases, Toscas's reassignment raises questions. The Washington Post also reports the reassignment of Eun Young Choi, another deputy assistant attorney general in the national security division.

The DOJ has declined to comment on these personnel shifts. Following Trump's inauguration, the DOJ also removed several senior officials from the division overseeing immigration courts, which are facing a significant backlog. While federal guidelines typically impose a 120-day moratorium on certain staff reassignments after new leadership is confirmed, these moves precede Bondi's official confirmation.

With James McHenry currently serving as acting attorney general, these reassignments may signal further changes within the department. Trump's history with the DOJ, including investigations and indictments during his first term, adds another layer of complexity to these developments.
