Kidnapped California Woman Monica De Leon Barba Reunited with Family After 8 Months

After eight months of captivity, Monica de Leon Barba has been safely returned to the United States and reunited with her family. The FBI confirmed her release, stating that she was kidnapped in Tepatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico on November 29, 2022, while walking home from work with her dog. Although Ms. de Leon Barba is now safe, the investigation into her kidnapping remains active, with no arrests made to date.

The FBI's San Francisco Division expressed immense relief at her safe return, emphasizing that their work is far from over. They continue to investigate the identities of her captors and the circumstances surrounding her abduction. A reward of up to $40,000 had previously been offered for information leading to her whereabouts.

Earlier this year, the FBI released videos related to the kidnapping. One video showed the abduction itself, depicting Ms. de Leon Barba being forced into a gray Volkswagen Jetta by several suspects. Three vehicles, including the Jetta, were involved in the incident. Ms. de Leon Barba's dog, seen running loose in the video, was later recovered by a family member.

Authorities described the suspects as four men, with another individual presumed to be the driver of a white Chevrolet Suburban. The U.S. Department of State reiterated its commitment to the protection of U.S. citizens abroad, highlighting the significance of their safety and well-being.

Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp of the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office commended the tireless efforts of FBI personnel both in California and Mexico, working in close collaboration with the family and partners on both sides of the border. He emphasized the profound relief felt by all involved in securing Monica’s safe return.
