Utah Mom Accused of Husband's Murder Sends Bizarre Email to Investigators

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Following the death of her husband, Eric Richins, Utah author Kouri Richins sent a peculiar email to the Summit County Sheriff's Office after being questioned about his passing. Kouri, 33, is accused of poisoning Eric, 39, with fentanyl in March 2022.

In the email, Kouri attempted to clarify details about her trips to Spain and Mexico after Eric's death, attributing the former to her sons' soccer qualifications and the latter to an established family tradition. She also claimed Eric had an affair and that they had no financial difficulties, contradicting prosecutors who cite financial disputes as a potential motive.

Prosecutors allege Kouri took out substantial life insurance policies on Eric and attempted to become the sole beneficiary of his estate. Court documents suggest Eric opposed Kouri's plan to purchase a costly mansion, which she intended to flip for profit. Kouri closed the deal on the mansion the day after Eric's death.

Kouri's defense attorney argued that financial mismanagement doesn't equate to murder. Kouri expressed in her email a desire to move past the investigation and grieve her husband. She also requested investigators examine CBD gummies they both consumed.

After Eric's death, Kouri authored a children's book about dealing with loss titled "Are You With Me?".
