In a recent development, a Mastic Beach man has been indicted for the alleged execution-style killing of another man in May. The suspect's brother and a friend are also facing charges for allegedly obstructing the investigation.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment of 34-year-old Joseph Scalafani on Tuesday. Scalafani is accused of shooting and killing 32-year-old Alex Smith in the parking lot of a Mastic Beach bar on Long Island.
Daniel Scalafani, 30, and Jeffrey Mercury, 61, are accused of aiding Joseph Scalafani's escape to Florida following the alleged murder.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Joseph Scalafani demanded a meeting with Smith on May 13, 2023, involving Scalafani's ex-girlfriend. This demand violated an existing order of protection. During this encounter, Scalafani allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened his ex-girlfriend.

A week later, Smith was at Linsa Torr’s Place in Mastic Beach with Scalafani's ex-girlfriend. As they exited the bar, Scalafani allegedly shot Smith multiple times in the back and torso. After Smith collapsed, Scalafani allegedly shot him twice in the head at close range before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. After crashing nearby, Scalafani reportedly escaped on foot.

Daniel Scalafani and Mercury are accused of providing Joseph Scalafani with money and misleading investigators about his whereabouts. Mercury allegedly drove Scalafani to Virginia.
Scalafani was apprehended in Florida on June 4th by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and extradited to Long Island on July 6th. He was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder, weapon possession, and criminal contempt. His next court date is August 23rd.
Mercury and Daniel Scalafani were arraigned on charges of hindering prosecution in June.
District Attorney Tierney emphasized the severity of the crime and the efforts made to apprehend the suspect, stating, "This defendant allegedly shot Alex Smith multiple times at close range... Then, the defendant’s brother and friend allegedly helped him flee the state... This defendant ran but could not hide."
