Mainstream Media Erupts Over Recent Supreme Court Rulings

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Several mainstream media outlets and prominent liberal figures have voiced strong disapproval following a series of recent Supreme Court decisions. These rulings, which addressed affirmative action in college admissions, President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, and a Colorado graphic designer's right to refuse service to same-sex couples, sparked widespread criticism.

CNN commentators raised concerns about the potential implications of these decisions, suggesting they could lead to a resurgence of discriminatory practices reminiscent of Jim Crow laws. MSNBC contributors and guests expressed fears that the rulings could pave the way for challenges to legalized gay marriage. Other commentators on social media labeled the court a "MAGA political operative."

Following the 6-3 ruling in favor of the Colorado web designer, CNN's Sara Sidner questioned the extent to which the decision could permit discrimination against various groups. MSNBC's Melissa Murray characterized the Court as "drunk on its own power," asserting that the 6-3 conservative majority was acting according to its own agenda. GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis criticized the court for "taking away rights instead of broadening rights for marginalized communities" and for not reflecting the country's values.

A CNN article highlighted the anxiety surrounding the ruling's potential impact on the 2015 same-sex marriage decision. The authors suggested that the decision, based on free speech grounds, could undermine state public accommodation laws and embolden religious conservatives.

Reactions on Twitter echoed the sentiments expressed on television. MSNBC contributor Dean Obeidallah accused the Court of empowering "right wing bigots," while host Chris Hayes expressed frustration over the student loan ruling. Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin went so far as to call the Court "corrupt" and a "MAGA political operator." Actor George Takei condemned the web designer decision, arguing that religious freedom does not grant the right to discriminate.
