DeWine Appoints Husted to Fill Vance's Senate Seat

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has selected Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted to replace JD Vance in the U.S. Senate. Vance vacated the seat upon becoming Vice President. The announcement took place at a press conference in Ohio on Friday.

DeWine explained his decision, stating he interviewed numerous qualified candidates. He ultimately chose Husted, highlighting their close working relationship over the past six years and praising Husted's understanding of Ohio, his character, and his capabilities.

Husted graciously accepted the appointment, expressing gratitude for DeWine's trust and emphasizing his commitment to serving the people of Ohio. Husted has a long history of public service, having served as Ohio Secretary of State, Speaker of the Ohio House, and State Senator. He was first elected Lieutenant Governor in 2018 and re-elected in 2022.

Vance officially resigned on January 10th, ten days before his and President Trump's inauguration. In his resignation statement, Vance thanked Ohioans for the opportunity to serve and pledged his support to President Trump's agenda.

Newly sworn-in Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) congratulated Vance on his new role and expressed his gratitude for Vance's support. With Husted's appointment, the Republican majority in the Senate will increase to 53. Moreno welcomed Husted to Washington and expressed his eagerness to collaborate.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott also welcomed Husted, praising his background and anticipating his contribution to advancing the Trump agenda. A special election will be held in November 2026 to fill the remainder of Vance's term.

This appointment follows Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's selection of Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Senator Marco Rubio, who is expected to resign following his confirmation as Secretary of State. Moody will be sworn in after Rubio's official resignation.
