Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A man who caused chaos at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas by tossing furniture from a 21st-floor window while holding a woman hostage has been identified as Matthew John Ermond Mannix, a 35-year-old fugitive from Golden, Colorado. Mannix has prior convictions in Colorado, including kidnapping in 2022 and property damage in 2012. The current fugitive warrant stems from the kidnapping conviction.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday and resulted in a five-hour standoff with police. Mannix is accused of causing significant damage to the hotel and endangering guests near the pool area as items like a coffee maker and even a desk plummeted from the 21st floor.

During a Wednesday court hearing, Prosecutor John Jones requested a $2 million bail, citing Mannix's history of violence and the severity of the standoff. Judge Rebecca Saxe ultimately set bail at $750,000. However, even if Mannix posts bail, he will remain in custody in Las Vegas due to the outstanding fugitive warrant, pending a Thursday hearing.

Mannix faces several charges related to the incident, including first-degree kidnapping, coercion with force, property destruction, and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon (not a firearm). A conviction on the kidnapping charge could result in a life sentence. Mannix claimed the woman involved was his girlfriend. She sustained minor injuries, and Mannix has been ordered to have no contact with her.

According to the arrest report, Mannix claimed to have a gun and threatened to shoot security personnel. While he did have a knife, no firearm was found. Police reported that both Mannix and the woman appeared to be under the influence of drugs and suffering from drug-induced paranoia, suggesting they had been using illegal narcotics for several days.
