North Korea Requests UN Security Council Hearing After Missile Launch

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Following North Korea's recent intercontinental ballistic missile launch into the East Sea, the United Nations Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting. In an unusual turn of events, North Korea has requested to address the council during this session.

This launch, which originated near Pyongyang, comes only days after North Korea threatened repercussions in response to perceived U.S. reconnaissance operations near its territory. South Korea's joint chiefs of staff confirmed the launch.

This will be the first time a North Korean representative has addressed the Security Council in approximately a decade. South Korea has confirmed that one of its representatives will attend the meeting as an observer.

The North Korean representative is anticipated to raise concerns about the U.S. military presence in the region, which North Korea claims has exceeded acceptable boundaries. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, recently accused the U.S. of deploying spy planes over North Korea's exclusive economic zone. She stated that North Korean warplanes intercepted a U.S. spy plane after it entered this zone. A second incursion later that day led to a stern warning from the North Korean military.
