Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

After a year and a half of service, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell has announced her resignation. In a memo to the force, Sewell stated, "I have made the decision to step down from my position. While my time here will come to a close, I will never step away from my advocacy and support for the NYPD, and I will always be a champion for the people of New York City."

Appointed by Mayor Eric Adams, Sewell made history as the first female commissioner of the nation's largest police force. Prior to her role with the NYPD, she served as chief of detectives in the Nassau County Police Department.

The memo did not disclose the reason behind Sewell's departure.

Mayor Adams expressed gratitude for Sewell's "devotion" and "steadfast leadership," highlighting her contribution to the administration's efforts in enhancing city safety. He acknowledged her around-the-clock dedication and emphasized the city's indebtedness to her service.

Patrick J. Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association, also commended Sewell's impact during her tenure, noting the challenges she faced and her commitment to improving officers' lives and working conditions. He expressed regret at her departure and acknowledged the void her leadership will leave.

Sewell's appointment fulfilled Adams' campaign promise to appoint a woman to the position. However, questions arose regarding her autonomy due to Adams' active involvement in the department's operations and the appointment of Phillip Banks as deputy mayor for public safety. Banks' frequent public briefings on crime, often held without Sewell's presence, further fueled these concerns.

Sewell's career began as a patrol officer with the Nassau County Police Department in 1997. She steadily rose through the ranks, serving as precinct commander, head of major cases, a top hostage negotiator, and finally chief of detectives.
