Pakistan Initiates Construction of .5 Billion Chinese-Designed Nuclear Power Plant

Created: JANUARY 15, 2025

Pakistan has embarked on the construction of a significant new energy project: a 1,200-megawatt nuclear power plant, designed by China and carrying a price tag of $3.5 billion. This initiative, spearheaded by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to boost the nation's clean energy production.

The groundbreaking ceremony follows a recent agreement with China’s National Nuclear Corporation Overseas for the construction of a Hualong One reactor. This third-generation reactor incorporates advanced safety features.

This project underscores the strong ties between Pakistan and China. Beyond this nuclear collaboration, China is also investing in Pakistani infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, power plants, and railways, connecting its western regions with the Gwadar port on the Indian Ocean.

Designated as Chashma-5, the new nuclear plant will be located on the Indus River in Mianwali, Punjab province. This site already houses four Chinese-supplied nuclear power plants.

Prime Minister Sharif hailed the Chashma-5 project as a major achievement and a testament to the strong partnership between Pakistan and China. He emphasized the project's potential to provide cleaner, more efficient, and affordable energy.

While Pakistan's first nuclear power plant came from Canada, currently only 8% of its electricity is generated from nuclear sources. The country aims to increase this to 20% by 2030.

China recently provided $5 billion in loans to Pakistan, facilitating a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund to address an economic crisis. Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for China's financial support during this challenging period.

With this new nuclear power plant underway, Pakistan is taking a significant step towards its clean energy goals and strengthening its energy independence.
