Report Reveals Security Gaps and Recommends Secret Service Overhaul After Trump Assassination Attempts

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

A House task force investigating the assassination attempts on former President Trump has issued its final report, exposing security vulnerabilities and "leadership failures" that culminated in the tragic July campaign rally shooting in Pennsylvania. The report also highlights concerning roadblocks encountered when seeking information about a second attempt on Trump's life at his Florida golf course in September.

The task force expressed concern over the lack of cooperation from agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Secret Service, FBI, and ATF in providing documents related to the September incident. The report specifically points out "critical vulnerabilities" at the golf course, noting that the Secret Service had previously identified the outer perimeter as a potential sniper position.

On September 15th, an individual allegedly concealed himself in the bushes outside Trump International Golf Club with a rifle while Trump was playing golf. This prompted the task force to recommend a comprehensive review of Secret Service protocols for golf courses, a significant change given the frequency with which Trump and other presidents utilize these venues.

Among other key recommendations is a proposal to restructure the Secret Service, potentially removing it from DHS oversight. The report argues that the current structure weakens the agency's ability to advocate for its budget and other priorities. It suggests that Congress explore the possibility of establishing the Secret Service as an independent agency, similar to its status prior to 2003 when it fell under the Treasury Department.

The task force also emphasized the need to optimize resource allocation by reevaluating the scope of Secret Service protection. The report highlights the increasing number of individuals under protection, particularly during presidential campaigns and events like the United Nations General Assembly, which strain resources. It suggests considering whether the Secret Service's protective duties for foreign leaders could be transferred or reduced to prioritize the safety of the president and other key U.S. figures.

The report contrasts the two assassination attempts, praising the successful response in the September incident while criticizing the failures that led to the July shooting in Pennsylvania, where Trump and two others were injured, and one person was killed. The task force concluded that the July incident was a result of a combination of planning failures, poor execution, leadership deficiencies, and pre-existing conditions that created a dangerous environment. In contrast, the September incident highlighted the effectiveness of well-executed protective measures.

The Secret Service responded to the report, acknowledging the findings and expressing appreciation for the task force's work. They affirmed their commitment to implementing changes based on both the task force's report and their internal inquiry. These changes include acquiring new technologies, enhancing training, and seeking additional resources.
