Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont recently weighed in on the public outcry surrounding Senator Elizabeth Warren's statements regarding the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Both progressive senators have faced criticism for their responses to the incident.
During an appearance on "Meet the Press," Sanders addressed Warren's earlier remarks, where she stated, "Violence is never the answer. This guy gets a trial who's allegedly killed the CEO of UnitedHealth[care], but you can only push people so far, and then they start to take matters into their own hands." Sanders echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the unacceptable nature of the violence while pointing to growing frustration with the healthcare industry.
Sanders stated that while violence is never justified, public anger towards health insurance companies is on the rise. He highlighted the industry's substantial profits while many Americans struggle to access necessary healthcare. He questioned why the U.S. remains the only developed nation without universal healthcare and pointed to the disparity in life expectancy between different socioeconomic groups.
Following intense criticism, Warren later clarified her position to Fox News Digital, emphasizing that there is no justification for murder. The alleged perpetrator, Luigi Mangione, has been lauded by some online as a symbol of resistance against the healthcare system.
Other progressive figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have also condemned the violence while simultaneously criticizing the current healthcare system. Ocasio-Cortez argued that denied healthcare claims can be perceived as an act of violence against individuals.
