Severe Weather Threats Span US: Storms, Heat, Wildfire Smoke, and Tropical Storm Calvin

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A wide swathe of the United States, from the Plains through the Ohio and Tennessee River valleys and into the Northeast, is bracing for potentially severe thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall accompanying these storms poses a significant flash flood risk, particularly in areas already saturated by recent precipitation.

Meanwhile, record-breaking heat continues to scorch the Southwest, southern Plains, and South Florida, with little respite anticipated in the near future.

Adding to the weather woes, smoke drifting from Canadian wildfires is expected to degrade air quality across portions of the Midwest, Great Lakes region, and Northeast.

In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Calvin is on track to impact Hawaii, bringing heavy rain and tropical-storm-force winds.
