A California social media influencer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for falsely accusing a Latino couple of attempting to kidnap her children. The incident, which occurred on December 7, 2020, involved 31-year-old Kathleen 'Katie' Sorensen filing a false police report after claiming the couple tried to abduct her children at a Michaels store in Sonoma County. District Attorney Carla Rodriguez stated that Sorensen has been held accountable and the sentence is considered fair, hoping it will provide closure for the wrongly accused couple.

Sorensen's fabricated story gained widespread attention after she shared a detailed account in an Instagram video a week after the alleged incident. The video's virality led to her appearance on a local news program where she continued to implicate the couple, despite police investigations contradicting her claims. As part of her sentence, Sorensen will be permitted to participate in a work release program for 60 days of her jail term. She is also subject to 12 months of probation, which includes a ban on using social media.
